| This book explains the concepts and practice of quality assurance and management in construction. Clearly written and well illustrated, with plenty of sample quality system documents and other pro-forma, this book will make the daunting task of developing, implementing and managing a quality system a great deal easier for contractors. |
| | Review of this title : | This well-written book is an introductory text to small to medium size contractors and sub-contractors who are considering a documented quality system. It describes quality, quality control and quality assurance, relating this to construction and project management in particular. It clearly describes basic key issues in the context of construction and identifies the perceived benefits of implementing quality assurance. The requirements of ISO9001/2 are considered by clause, examples for achieving the requirements and establishing a quality system are described. Motivation of personnel to implement a quality system is considered.
Crucial points concerning construction quality are identified: the construction site being the contractors' production line, where a substantial part of the ISO9001/2 is implemented, and each project is unique, requiring the quality systems to be tailored accordingly. The described method being project quality and inspection and test plans - used by staff and to demonstrate control to client. The purpose of such documents to manage inspection and the subsequent collection of records is explained. The high cost of remedial work to rectify defective work, at the contractors' expense, is noted and quality records identified as necessary "evidence in litigation". A good description of third party accredited certification is included.
This is a comprehensive basic guide and is a balanced text addressing the pertinent issues of quality management and quality systems for contractors. It acts as a reminder of the need for quality assurance to anyone in the industry. Written in a simple easy style it is aimed at those implementing or even just considering quality systems, rather than those who wish to enhance existing systems.
